Sugar Baby Gone Well I've been under the weather, since you ain’t my baby no more I've been steady under the weather, since you ain’t my baby no more Aw, but I been drinkin’ lots of fluids, ever since you walked out that door. Black coffee in the morning, and whiskey at night Straight black coffee in the morning, and whiskey all through the night Oh, with my sugar baby gone, need something make me feel alright. Out in the woods, babe, tree come crashin’ down A-way out in the woods, babe, big ol’ tree come crashin’ down But if no one’s there to hear it, does it still make a sound? And does your voice still sound sweet when there’s nothin’ left to say? Does your voice still sound so sweet, dear, when there’s nothin’ left to say? And does your breath still go in and out, without me there to take it away? Well I ain’t much of a looker, I'm more of a backward glance I know I ain’t much of a looker, I'm more of a backward glance Aw, but I’d pay forward every penny in my pocket, just for one more chance. See, I’ve been workin’ on my credit, on my figure too I’ve been lately workin’ on my credit, workin’ on my figure too And baby I figure I’m still overdue a little credit from you. (repeat verse 1)

Truckload of Bricks I’ve got a truckload of bricks sitting on my collar, truckload of bricks just sitting on my collar, Got truckload of bricks just sitting on my collar, can’t catch a break, a deal, or a dollar – Come on, Baby, won’t you help me take a load off – help keep me safe from harm, oh, Come on, Baby, won’t you help me take a load off – help me with your loving arms. I’ve got a whole lot of rocks weighing down my pockets, whole lot of rocks weighing down my pockets, Got a whole lot of rocks weighing down my pockets, My heart is in jail, won’t you help me unlock it? Come on, Baby, won’t you do a gal a favor? Tell me it’ll be alright, now, Come on, Baby, won’t you do a gal a favor? Help me make it through the night. I’ve got a quick pile of sand underneath my feet now, quick pile of sand right underneath my feet, I’ve got a quick pile of sand underneath my feet, now won’t you help me out, ‘cause I’m sinking down, down – Come on, Baby, won’t you throw me a rope? I swear I’ll only use it to survive, now Come on, Baby, won’t you throw me a rope? Help me make it out alive. I’ve got a truckload of bricks sitting on my collar, truckload of bricks just sitting on my collar, I’ve got truckload of bricks just sitting on my collar, can’t catch a break, a deal, or a dollar – Come on, Baby, won’t you help me take a load off – help keep me safe from harm, oh, Come on, Baby, won’t you help me take a load off – help me with your loving arms. (Tell me it’ll be alright. And help me make it through the night.)

Song About Nothing I think I’m gonna write a little song all about NOTHIN. I think I’m gonna get a little SOMETHIN right off of my mind, ‘Cuz every time I write another song that’s about SOMETHIN…well… It just gets me in NOTHIN BUT TROUBLE almost all the time. ‘Cuz when I write about laughin, you think it’s all a joke And when I write about money, then you think I’m broke… I write about cryin, you think I’m blue, And if I write about love, you think it’s all about you… I write about leavin, you think I’m unhappy… I write about kissin, and you think I’m too sappy… I write about hate, you think it’s bad intention, And another song about whiskey, they would do an intervention… I think I’m gonna write a little song about NOTHIN. … ‘Cuz when I write about my past, then I’m “livin in yesterday” And when I write about the future, I’m just “wishin our time away”… I write about my kids, you think I’m exploiting, Write about anything-other-than-you and you think I’m avoiding… I write about workin and you think I’m underpaid, I write about the weekend and you think I’m getting laid, I don’t write one at all and you think I’m in a slump And if I write what I’m really thinkin, you might think I’m smokin somethin… So… I think I’m gonna write a little song all about NOTHIN. I think I’m gonna get a little SOMETHIN right off of my mind, ‘Cuz every time I write another song that’s about SOMETHIN…well… It just gets me in NOTHIN BUT TROUBLE almost all the time. Yeah every time I write another song that’s about ANYTHING AT ALL… Well it just gets me in NOTHIN BUT TROUBLE almost all the time.

Come Back to Me Come back to me, my darling. Come back to me, my dear. Come back to me, so I can touch your lovely face… With my knuckles when I punch you out for leaving me here. Baby – won’t you tell me – now, what kind of jerk Would leave the ones who love ’em the most all alone on this earth. Come back to me, so I have wrap my lonesome arms Around your neck and choke you right back to death… Come back to me. Come back to me – raise your funny eyebrow one more time Curl up the edge of your lip when you speak my name. Come back to me – oh, let me lay you down… On the bed of nails so you can feel my pain. How could you be so cruel, and leave me broken-hearted? And once you’ve had your fix of the fame of being Dearly Departed…then… Come back to me, so I can press my heavy head Down on your chest until you can’t find your breath… Come back to me.

Scared of the Dark REFRAIN: Are you scared of the dark? Scared of the dark behind my eyes? Does it make you feel uneasy to think about the heartaches and goodbyes? And are you scared of the dark – scared of the dark things in this world? Don’t be scared of me, darlin – I’m just a plain old complicated girl. If I see the glass half-empty, it’s just that I appreciate the water. If I seem like a cynic, it’s only that I’d hoped for so much more. Dreams cannot be shattered if you never had them in the first place and hope is only helpful when you remember what you had it for. (REPEAT REFRAIN) Lookin on the bright side of life is fine, but it will blind you if you don’t take the time to look the other way every now and then. If you really want to know just what you’ve got, then you’ve got to know what’s out there – gotta know just what you’re up against when you walk out that front door once again. (REPEAT REFRAIN)

With Your Blue Do you show your face, or do you run and hide? Do you stand out in the rain, or crawl way back inside? Do you smile and nod, and say that you’re just fine? Oh darlin, show me yours and I will show you mine. What do you do? What do you do? Oh, baby what do you do with your Blue? Do you hold your breath, or do you blow it out? Do you hold your tongue? Do you sing, do you shout? Do you stand around with your heart in your hand? Do you want to move, and do you think you can? What do you do? What do you do? Oh, baby what do you do with your Blue? What do you do? What do you do? Oh, baby what do you do with your Blue?

Like a Baby You sit and you stew and you wail and you moan You say I don’t care – that I’ve left you alone You tell me “Don’t bother – won’t do any good …to try and explain what’s been misunderstood” And I tiptoe around and I don’t make a sound. I keep my head down and my feet on the ground. I stand there all stoic as you rant and you rave …and I say “There are some things nobody can save” and you scream and you yell as I stare at my feet, And I walk to my car and I drive down the street And I cry, and I cry, and I cry Like a baby. Now you sip on a beer and force out a smile and say “I know it’s weird, and it has been a while and I know what to do with the misunderstood …but where do I file all the things that were good?” And your voice won’t come out, but your chin tells me how even though you may try, it’s still hard for you now and I sit like a child, my head hanging low, and you laugh and you sigh and you get up to go… and I know my words can’t help anymore and you drive down the street and I close the front door… And I cry, and I cry, and I cry Like a baby. And I cry, and I cry, and I cry Like a baby.

Nothin’ But the Ground Ain’t nothin’ wrong, nothin’ but a thing Ain’t nothin’ but a song when the day is long make me wanna sing Ain’t nothin’ like the sound of the smack of fallin’ down Ain’t nothin’ but the ground always got my back when trouble comes around. Ain’t nothin’ for the sky to up and fall out of the blue. Ain’t nothin’ for my eye to get all caught up on you. Ain’t nothin’ but the birds, ain’t nothin’ but the bees… Ain’t nothin’ but the truth when you get caught down on your knees. Ain’t nothin’ wrong, nothin’ but a thing Ain’t nothin’ but a song when the day is long make me wanna sing Ain’t nothin’ like the sound of the smack of fallin’ down Ain’t nothin’ but the ground always got my back when trouble comes around. Ain’t nothin’ for the wind to whip right in and steal away your friends. Ain’t nothin’ for the sun (to) make it look all fun, bring ‘em back again. Ain’t nothin’ but a rope look like a ray of hope when you’re sinkin’ in the sand. Ain’t nothin’ but a noose cut loose to put the slack back in your hands. Ain’t nothin’ wrong, nothin’ but a thing Ain’t nothin’ but a song when the day is long make me wanna sing Ain’t nothin’ like the sound of the smack of fallin’ down Ain’t nothin’ but the ground always got my back when trouble comes around.

Baby Girl Someday somebody’s gonna put you down. Someday somebody’s gonna make you cry. Someday somebody’s gonna jerk you around …and maybe someday I …won’t fall apart over a broken heart still many moons away… but today, oh Baby Girl, is not that day. Someday somebody’s gonna hurt you bad. Someday somebody’s gonna tell a lie. Someday somebody’s gonna break what faith you had …and maybe someday I …won’t fall apart over a broken heart still many moons away… but today, oh Baby Girl, is not that day. Someday we’ll sit together at a table In a kitchen not yet known And cup our hands around pottery not yet fired Drinkin coffee not yet grown… And we will throw back out heads, laugh, and reminisce About stories yet to unfold, And I will take your hand, say “Hey, girl, we made it. When did we get so old?” And that’s about the time when I can rest my mind …knowing it all came out okay… but today, oh Baby Girl, is not that day. Someday somebody’s gonna do you wrong. Someday somebody’s gonna say goodbye. Someday somebody’s gonna spoil your favorite song …and maybe someday I …won’t fall apart over a broken heart still many moons away… but today, oh Baby Girl, is not that day. No, today, oh Baby Girl, is not that day.

Liar’s Lullaby The moon is high, and day is done And though I am still the one Left to wonder and to weep, You’re the one who has to sleep. Stretch your arms, turn down your bed Rest your darling, weary head Secrets though tucked safe you keep, You’re the one who has to sleep. Time is kind, but moments burn Take a number, wait your turn Count your blessings with your sheep- You’re the one who has to sleep. Tell your love you do not know Why you’re tossing, turning so - Lying still and falling deep - You’re the one who has to sleep. Lying still and falling deep- You’re the one who has to sleep.

No Regrets If you’ve got no regrets, babe, ain’t got no business with me. Not a single regret? Oh, I find that hard to believe… If you’re not sorry for a solitary thing you have done, You’ve either got no soul or don’t know how to have fun… If you’ve got no regrets, babe, ain’t got no business with me. And if you ain’t got no skeletons, ain’t got no bones …in the corners or the closets, may as well go on home… ‘Cuz if you ain’t got no skeletons, ain't got no past, I don’t wanna be the first and sure as hell won’t be the last. If you’ve got no bones, BABY, go ahead and leave me alone. And if you’ve got no junk in your trunk, no need to give me a call. You’ve got no business checkin SHIT at the door…with baggage that small… ‘cuz if you ain’t got no baggage, no hard history, You’re either lyin through your teeth, or you’re too good for me. If you’ve got no junk in your trunk, ain’t got no business at all. If you’ve got no regrets, babe, ain’t got no business with me. Not a single regret? Oh, I find that hard to believe… If you’re not sorry for a solitary thing you have done, You’ve either got no soul or don’t know how to have fun… If you’ve got no regrets, babe, ain’t got no business with me.

Fair Trade I stumbled over fresh green grass…just to get to another glass. I looked up at a star-filled sky…and counted all the ways to die. I cut my hand on a window pane…just to get out of the rain. I got my hair all wet…fell into a nice, warm bed… I let my whole world freeze in place…just to look at your face. I fell for you just like a diving bird…then I couldn’t write another word… It was a fair trade, of it was a fair trade… It was a fair trade I suppose. I woke up on a stranger’s floor…couldn’t stay there anymore… I ran and ran until I couldn’t stand…then I started up another band… I played and Played until my strings gave out…caught in the shadow of a doubt… I fell into a deep, dark well…just so I wouldn’t have to tell… But lyin with my back against the ground…I can see for miles around… Here under an electric sky…I’ll live and live until I die… Oh, it’s a fair trade. Oh, well it’s a fair trade. It’s a fair trade I suppose.

I Don’t Stand in Line I hadn’t heard your name, baby, in such a long time Now they say that you’re lookin for me…but darling, I don’t stand in line to be put down anymore, no, that’s not how I roll. Yeah things have changed ever since that day when you last crushed my soul (ref): and I guess I should credit you for showin me that I can feel and how can I blame you for walkin through an open door, but if you don’t mind, I think I’ll leave you in the past where you belong Cuz I don’t stand in line to be put down anymore. When I first met you, baby, was I ever green Had little hearts inside my eyes – I thought you’d treat me like a queen, well …I guess I didn’t realize I was standing in line Ready to pay for what you couldn’t give away, but not today, no, not this time and I guess I should credit you for showin me that I can feel and how can I blame you for walkin through an open door, but if you don’t mind, I think I’ll leave you in the past where you belong Cuz I don’t stand in line to be put down anymore. Oh darling I’m so glad you wanna get in touch with me Don’t get me wrong – I’m not bitin – but I do appreciate the opportunity to let you know just where I stand, but I’ll do it with class, yeah I’ll do it right Make my voice heard without sayin a word, and unlike you, still be able to sleep at night and I guess I should credit you for showin me that I can feel and how can I blame you for walkin through an open door, but if you don’t mind, I think I’ll leave you in the past where you belong Cuz I don’t stand in line to be put down anymore. No I don’t stand in line to be put down…anymo…o…ore.

You Don’t Deserve This Song You don’t deserve this song just like the one before, and the one before… …and the one before, and I hate myself when I pick up the guitar and I write one more, and You don’t deserve this song just like the one where I tell how you broke my heart, and You don’t deserve this song just like the one where I tell how I fell apart and like the one where I landed flat on my face, the one where I slipped into a deep, dark place, just like the one where I learned to crawl back out, and the one where I admit that I still think about you – You don’t deserve this song. And I DO deserve this song just like the one before, and the one before… …and I’ tryin not to hate myself, so I pick up the guitar and write ONE DAME MORE, and I do deserve this song because you tug at the heart on my sleeve and I let you. And I do deserve this song so I can try moving on instead of tryin to forget you. So I bare my soul, let go my pride (it’s easier than trying to keep it all inside), ‘cuz I wanna make it through to another day, where maybe everything’ll just be okay – I do, I do deserve this song. Maybe one day we’ll move beyond this curve And we’ll come to an end that we both deserve – A moment when we can let things go… But until then, I just want you to know… …that… You don’t deserve this song just like the one before, and the one before… …and the one before, and I hate myself when I pick up the guitar and I write one damn more, and You don’t deserve this song just like the one where I tell how you broke my heart, and You don’t deserve this song just like the one where I tell how I fell apart and like the one where I landed flat on my face, the one where I slipped into a deep, dark place, just like the one where I learned to crawl back out, and the one where I admit that I still think about you – You don’t deserve this song. No, you don’t deserve this song.

Don’t Hold Me Here Well, I woke up this morning with you on my mind And a smile on my face from the night we left behind. It will stay with me as I go along my way And maybe I’ll see you on the other side of the day. But baby, STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN – I’m countin on you – At the end of a long day doin what you do – Show me you’re with me the best way you know how. Oh, don’t hold me here, honey baby – just hold me now. Another working day behind me and it’s time to settle down. I may curl up with a good book, or step out on the town. I may go solo, or with someone by my side… …but right now it’s good to see you with your sweet arms open wide. But baby, STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN – I’m countin on you – At the end of a long day doin what you do – Show me you’re with me the best way you know how. Oh, don’t hold me here, honey baby – just hold me now. ‘Cuz just to be with you, darlin, soothes my soul. I wanna be in your arms, but not in your control So don’t hold me back, and please don’t tell me where to go – Just hold me tight when the lights are low. Baby, STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN – I’m countin on you – At the end of a long day doin what you do – Show me you’re with me the best way you know how. Oh, don’t hold me here, honey baby – just hold me now. No, don’t hold me here, honey baby – just hold me now.

Heavy Hand Babe, you left me with a heavy hand – It weeps all night and sleeps all day. It won’t take calls or come to the door When others ask it out to play. Babe, you left me with a heavy hand – It lies around and it rants and raves. It hasn’t held a fork in days And barely bathes and never shaves. Oh, babe, what did I do? Oh, I just can’t understand. Why did you do me like you did me? Left me here with nothin but a heavy hand. Babe, you let my poor hand down. Nailed it right down to the floor. Without your weight to keep it still It just won’t raise up anymore. Oh, babe, what did I do? Oh, I just can’t understand. Why did you do me like you did me? Left me here with nothin but a heavy hand. Well, put that glass back in my hand And darlin’ – pour yourself right in. Make it raise you to my lips So I can taste your pain again. Yes, put that glass back in my hand And darlin’ – pour yourself right in. Make it raise you to my lips So I can taste your pain again. So I can taste your pain again. So I can taste your pain again.

Badass Baby (for Floyd)* My baby walks around all struttin his stuff – “Don’t mess with me ‘cuz I’m tumble and rough.” But don’t be fooled – under neath it all, He’s just a squishy wishy-washy baby doll. He’s just a badass baby, nothin but a badass baby. Yeah, he’s my badass baby and I love him all the time. Well he stays out late, all hours of the night, He goes out on the prowl itchin for a fight. But he always comes home, tail between his legs – He’s not too course to cuddle, not too big to beg. He’s just a badass baby, nothin but a badass baby. Yeah, he’s my badass baby and I love him all the time. He might puff out his chest, get all up in your face, Wave his badass banner all over the place. But under the attitude, beneath that pride? Even his own shadow makes him run and hide. He’s just a badass baby, nothin but a badass baby. Yeah, he’s my badass baby and I love him all the time. *(R.I.P. Floyd) ((Floyd was a cat. And a Badass Baby extraordinaire.))

I Fell For You I fell for you, fell for you hard I fell for you in my front yard I fell for you, like a shooting star And I fell for you, just how you are. Now it’s been years since that first day We sat and talked the hours away And now I don’t quite know what to say When you go and talk to me this way And there are days and there are nights And there is whiskey and there are fights And times I think it won’t be alright And times I think, well, it just might. I fell for you, fell for you hard I fell for you in my front yard I fell for you, like a shooting star And I fell for you, just how you are. Sometimes I lie with you in bed Sometimes I lie to you in my head Sometimes I see nothing but red And sometimes I see blue skies instead And down that road, what will you think about When you look at me across this couch? Will you just look for a quick way out? Or will you see a gal you can’t live without? I fell for you, fell for you hard I fell for you in my front yard I fell for you, like a shooting star And I fell for you, just how you are.

Moonshine REF: You are my moonshine, my only moonshine You make me think I’m happy when I’m not. You never know, dear, how you consume me- Oh my moonshine, you’re all that I got. The other night dear, while I sat drinking, I thought I heard you say you really care. When I awoke hung over the next mornin’- I looked around but you were not there. (REF.) In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me- When awake, I’m callin’ out your name. Come back, come back, ‘cuz I can’t live without you- Oh please don’t take my moonshine away. (REF.)

about

I recorded these songs in two days at La La Land studios in Louisville, KY.
They are soulful and imperfect, as am I. They are here as a document of and testament to my close and complex relationship with music - my primary medium for processing and storytelling.
The songs in this collection are also sorted by color, as I tend to associate colors with songs (though am not sure what the colors mean).
Thanks for listening!
